From Kool Herc to ChatGPT: The DJ Tradition of Innovation

People think AI is the end of the DJ's creativity. They have it backwards. Every major DJ innovation in history was about tools, and the artists who mastered them.

People think AI is the end of the DJ's creativity. They have it backwards. Every major DJ innovation in history was about tools, and the artists who mastered them.

Kool Herc didn't invent the break — the break was always in the record. He invented the technique of isolating it. Two turntables, one idea, and the whole culture changed. That was 1973 in the South Bronx.

Grandmaster Flash took it further. He developed precision scratching, invented the punch phrase, and figured out how to cue records with your ear while the crowd heard something else. People thought it looked like magic. It was practice, technique, and a deep relationship with the tools.

Move forward to the 90s and early 2000s. Serato drops. Now your whole crate is on a laptop. The purists said it wasn't real DJing. They said it was cheating. Meanwhile, the DJs who learned Serato were playing bigger stages with more flexibility and better reliability than ever before.

Same conversation, different technology.

Here's what I know from being in this culture for a long time: the technology has never been the DJ. The DJ is the person behind the table. The one who reads the room. The one who knows what comes next before the crowd does. The one who holds the energy in the room with two hands.

AI doesn't do any of that. AI can write your booking email. It can draft your contract. It can help you post on Instagram every day without burning out. It can handle the business side of your craft so you can pour everything into the art side.

The DJs who built this culture were innovators. They used whatever tools they had to push the craft forward. That's the real tradition — not the specific tool, but the willingness to evolve.

Using AI to run your DJ business isn't a betrayal of the culture. It's the next chapter of it.
